Jianguo Liu holds the Rachel Carson Chair in Sustainability, is a University Distinguished Professor, and serves as the Founding Director of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability at Michigan State University (MSU). He came to MSU after completing his postdoctoral study at Harvard University. Liu is a pioneer in systems integration for global sustainability (e.g., integration of natural and social sciences, policy, and technology for understanding and promoting global sustainability). He has developed key integrated frameworks of coupled human and natural systems, telecoupling, and metacoupling, which have been widely applied to address various global challenges and open up new interdisciplinary frontiers. His outstanding accomplishments have been recognized by numerous prestigious honors and awards. For example, he is a recipient of the World Sustainability Award and the Gunnerus Award in Sustainability Science. He is also an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, American Philosophical Society, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters.
